Sketches by William Pierce Coburn
Drawings are used to illustrate design ideas. They provide clarity at the start of a project and help visualize the ultimate reality of the designed space or object. They capture the present understanding of a site's condition and context as well as an early vision leading to the eventual design solution.

Blackhawk Ranch Country Club Garden Study - Diablo, CA
A one acre garden for a suburban country club in a planned community. The design featured a body of water at its edge and a view of Mt. Diablo beyond. Elements of the garden were developed for outdoor enjoyment. Among these were the trellised paths and flower borders at the edge of the main lawn panel, as well as the water gazebo. This gazebo was intended to indirectly evoke a deteriorated classical space now in ruin. Tall columns and garden benches set out into the water were to be draped with garlands of wisteria.
